Kearney Public Schools is accepting applications for the position of Principal at the new K-5 Alternative Elementary School starting the 2025-2026 school year. The school will open in 26-27 with a year of planning and preparation. This position has a 215 day contract with competitive salary and benefits. Candidates must hold a valid Administrator's Certificate. Position is open until filled.
QUALIFICATIONS: The administrator will meet all qualifications and behavior standards as set by State of Nebraska authority. In accordance with certification requirements and the performance expectations of the Kearney Public Schools, all administrators shall meet the following employment criteria:
- Master’s Degree in Education is required. Must hold or be eligible to obtain a Nebraska Department of Education Administrative Certificate with a K-6 Principal endorsement.
- Prior Administrative experience in an educational setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of curriculum development, technology, supervision of staff, staff evaluation, discipline policies, school laws, management of staff and students, planning, and community relations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (Include, but are not limited to)
- Provides direction for staff and students.
- Provides leadership and supervises staff in developing, organizing and utilizing resources for an effective instructional program at the center.
- Conducts program and staff evaluations on a regular basis.
- Lead staff and students using innovative strategies to engage students while encouraging them to take responsibility for their learning.
- Maintain a rigorous academic curriculum in a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment that encourages students to achieve at their best level while becoming productive members in their school and community.
- Establish a positive learning environment by creating consistent behavior expectations and encourage self-management and coping skills to allow students to maintain a positive self-concept.
- Encourages participation in educational workshops for staff development specific to needs.
- Provides an appropriate and safe environment for learning.
- Establishes and implements school improvement plans in coordination with the district improvement plans and community stakeholders.
- Establishes future staff, material, equipment, and facility needs.
- Develops the programming and schedule based on projected enrollments.
- Provides for the personal needs of students and staff.
- Modifies curriculum to meet student needs with assistance from appropriate directors and supervisors.
- Establishes and maintains effective oral and written communication.
- Conducts marketing of education programs.
- Partners with staff, students, parents, and outside agencies to support the learning and growth of each student.
- Attends regular meetings and develops relationships with community partners and support agencies coordinating school and community resources and support for students and families.
- Attends KPS Elementary Administration meetings, Leadership Councils, and other assigned Leadership Meetings.
- Attends and is a member of the District Threat Assessment and District Safety teams.
- Ensures the staff is following SAT Team, 504 team, and IEP team plans for all students and works with district directors to make sure the plans are appropriate.
- Works with district and building leadership to determine facility placements for potential K-5 students.
- Works with district and building leadership and center staff to make sure student assignments are completed and delivered to buildings for students who are in suspension services.
- Has experience in the development and management of behavior plans and processes.
- Monitors student progress data ensuring growth and achievement with a focus on preparing to return to their home building.
- Works with district and building leadership to develop readiness programs and opportunities for students allowing them to successfully transition back to the regular setting.
- Serves as a positive school representative when working with the media.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Superintendent.
