JOB DESCRIPTION:  The School Nurse is a member of an interdisciplinary education team, whose goal is to assist children and teachers toward better school achievement through improved health, both emotionally and physically.  He/she also provides health instruction via the team approach.

           

QUALIFICATIONS:    

  1. Education Level:  RN      
  2. Certification or Licensure:  RN and a valid Nebraska Driver’s License
  3. Interest in and ability to work with children.
  4. Maintains sound working relationships with school personnel and the community.
  5. Understands and complies with confidentiality regulations.
  6. Maintains standard Red Cross First Aid Certification and conducts CPR certification.
  7. Serves as a role model of good health to students and school staff.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:  (Include, but are not limited to)

  1. Works in coordination with and provides services and guidance for students, teachers and staff, building administrators, parents and families, and community agencies related to health issues.
  2. Assists school administrators and staff in development of an interrelated, coordinated total health program which includes health services, health education, and a healthful school environment.
  3. Participates in planning modification of the school program to meet special needs of students.
  4. Participates and gives leadership to planning for the provision of proper emergency care and first aid for sudden illnesses or accidents incurred under school jurisdiction.
  5. Evaluates students and recognizes those signs and symptoms which are suggestive of illnesses, including communicable diseases, and refers students having such signs and symptoms for diagnosis and treatment.
  6. Collaborates and consults with team members and family service providers.
  7. Provides health counseling and guidance to students and parents in individual or small group situations.
  8. Provides nursing services in established health appraisal procedures carried on in the school structure including: planning and implementation of health appraisal and screening programs; referrals for professional evaluation and diagnosis; and helps students and families identify available, acceptable, and accessible resources.
  9. Provides follow-up activities for professional recommendations including: interpretation of these recommendations, treatment, and remediation; assisting children and their family to understand the professional recommendation; and monitoring the health aspect of the student’s program.
  10. Participates in staffings of students encountering difficulties in school.
  11. Assists the teacher in the classroom health instruction program, as a resource person, and provides supportive materials.
  12. Maintains permanent health records for each student and interprets pertinent health data to school personnel.
  13. Serves as a liaison between school, home, and community in improving the health of students.
  14. Contributes to in-service education programs.
  15. Supervises LPNs in task assignments, giving direction and instruction as required.
  1. Provides appropriate written instruction on medical/health-related procedures with teachers and service team members are required to implement.
  2. Provides precautionary information for staff members working with medically complex children, (hand washing, toy cleaning, infection control, emergency procedures, effects of medication.)
  3. Provides in-service and training for staff and families regarding health protocols and procedures.
